Pizza Bear scrimped and saved a year’s worth of measly tips to build his first reel-to-reel recorder, using the City’s natural rhythms to lay down his classic debut album 30 Minutes Or Less. With the help of his uncle’s foreclosed pawn shop, and the outdated equipment that had never been resold, Pizza Bear cemented his place in intergalactic lore. Funky, upbeat, and raw, his material would tackle life in the city, the brutality of making it on your own, and the inherent talent that each and every one of us has inside just waiting to be unlocked by a hot and crispy slice. In the years that followed, he would never abandon his late uncle’s treasures, each subsequent album incorporating the broken and busted instruments as a testament to Pizza Bear’s own talent and the craftsmanship of the classic tools. Wherever his uncle is now, we know he’s looking down on his nephew with pride.
